Tift County School Nutrition staff members recently attended the Georgia School Nutrition Association Kickoff Luncheon in Macon. At this event Eighth Street Middle School and Matt Wilson Elementary received the Cafeteria of Excellence Award. It means working together for the benefit of our students, staff, and community! 💙 Yesterday, staff members from all departments united to ensure every TCHS student received lunch. Lunches were put together and delivered to classrooms to help with restricted movement within the building. Through a partnership with Southwell, all Tift County Students, Staff and Retirees can be seen for non-emergent/sick visits at the clinic at 8th Street Middle School Monday-Friday from 7:30 am – 4:00 pm. This morning, Mrs. Gore led an After Action Analysis with district leaders to debrief on yesterday's incident at TCHS. The team discussed processes and procedures that worked well, identified areas of concern, and focused on ways to improve. In addition to all the existing safety and security measures in place, Tift County Schools has been researching and obtaining pricing for metal detectors. Currently, we are in the process of ordering metal detectors, once on hand they will be installed at our secondary schools. #4theT

After communicating with the National Weather Service and the local Emergency Management Agency we have determined that weather conditions predicted for our area are not suitable for the normal course of operation. As a result, all Tift County Schools will be closed Thursday, September 26th and Friday, September 27th. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Please stay safe and follow local weather updates. We will continue to provide further information as needed. #4theT

Our system security officers work to be a positive influence in our students' lives. They build trust with our students to make sure they feel safe and supported. One example is Officer Seay at Matt Wilson, she is taking time to help this student with basketball skills. #4theT

There was a medical emergency with one child at Tift County HIgh School at approximately 11:45am. The school was inadvertently placed on lockdown. Out of an abundance of caution, system security personnel followed lockdown procedures to ensure there was no threat to the safety and security of our students and staff.

We continue working with our local Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service to monitor the weather, the timing, and potential impact on our area. Ensuring the safety and security of our students and staff is our top priority. We anticipate making a decision regarding any changes to our school operations by tomorrow afternoon at the latest. If it is determined that a change is necessary, we will notify everyone as soon as possible. Stay tuned for updates!

We appreciate the prompt response and diligence of local and federal law enforcement agencies regarding the situation at Eighth Street Middle School today. It was only a matter of minutes between the time that we were made aware of the threat and the time that law enforcement had the student in custody. As a result of their thorough investigation, a second ESMS student was also taken into custody. We remain committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all our students and staff. #4theT

Law enforcement received information about a potential threat to Eighth Street Middle School that resulted in a student being taken into custody. We are unaware of any further threat to students or staff in connection with this incident. We appreciate the partnership with law enforcement and their swift response to this situation. As is the case for systems across the state and country, Tift County Schools continues to receive an increase in social media driven threats of violence. These will be investigated and handled accordingly by school officials and local law enforcement.
Please talk with your children about appropriate and inappropriate ways to express their feelings, the seriousness of making threats, and the potential consequences of their statements. Please ensure your students know who to talk to if they learn of a threat.
The ANONYMOUS ALERTS tip line is accessible from any page on our website. Students or parents can submit information related to any suspicious activity. Alerts are monitored by school administrators and system security staff and responded to in a timely manner.
