Mrs. Hobbs' 3rd grade group's Animal Adaptation Investigation Lab-Bird Beaks. Students had to use hand tools like chopsticks, tweezers, spoons, clothes pins, and a dropper to try to pick up various items in 30 second intervals such as Swedish Fish, pieces of yarn, beans, and rubber erasers. These tools were to simulate the different types of bird beaks (pointed beak, hooked beak, tubular bills, pouch-like beaks, and spear-like beaks), and the objects to be picked up were to simulate what many birds eat (seeds/berries, worms, fish, etc.). The students learned what adaptations (certain kinds of beaks) were best to get certain types of prey.

Mr. Scott Carlson, a University of Georgia County Extension Coordinator for the Southwest District of Georgia (based out of Worth County), came and worked with Mrs. Hobbs' fifth grade group on labs that centered around destructive forces on farmers' fields such as wind erosion and water erosion. Students got to participate in hands-on labs and see the effects on the soil. They learned how these destructive forces formed Providence Canyon in Georgia, and they learned about better farming practices to prevent future erosion.
