Matt Wilson At-A-Glance
Matt Wilson Elementary School currently serves 535 students in grades four, five, and six. Built in 1956 for elementary and high school students from the African American community, Matt Wilson School was built on land sold to the Tift County Board of Education by Matt Wilson, a farmer and community leader interested in making a lasting contribution to the community. The Wilson family continues the legacy of active involvement in Tifton today.
In 1971, Wilson School was integrated, and all county seventh graders attended Matt Wilson Junior High School. Then in 1995, the school was reconfigured to include fifth and sixth, as well as seventh grades. Matt Wilson’s current grade configuration of fourth, fifth, and sixth grade has been in place since 1998.
Reading is Our Passion
Matt Wilson is passionate about reading. Each year we invite a renowned children’s author to speak to students. Reading clubs, such as the Extreme Readers and Georgia Book Award Club, challenge learners to vary reading choices, and Accelerated Reader tests reward reading success. Be sure to visit the Media Center page for more information about reading incentives, author visits, and programs.
