Georgia Children's Book Award Program
The University of Georgia College of Education bestows the annual Georgia Children’s Book Award to the book voted most popular by Georgia children in grades four through eight. Matt Wilson students and staff have participated for the past five years.
Our goal in choosing to participate in this statewide program is to promote discussion among students and teachers about the books they read while exposing students to a variety of authors and genres. We are experimenting with a “wiki” as a vehicle for students to dialogue about their reading! Students who have passed an AR test (70%) on ONE Georgia Book Award nominee may join the online book club found on the Media Page of the MW web page.
The media center provides several copies of the nominated titles and AR tests. Students and staff who read or listen to at least three titles from the list may vote on their personal favorite (Only students who have scored 70% or higher on all three or more tests will be eligible to vote) in April. If a student has read a book before this school year – GREAT! - that AR test will count. Many students have already read Heat by Mike Lupica or The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. They are ahead of the game!
Matt Wilson students were on the money for 2007-2008! They, along with the majority of Georgia students in grades 4 - 8, voted for Flush, by Carl Hiaasen.
