The fifth and sixth grade students here at Matt Wilson Elementary had an opportunity to enter an annual essay contest sponsored by the DAR. The topic was: Describe how you felt on May 10, 1869, when the golden spike was driven at Promontory Summit, Utah, to celebrate the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad. Students from Tift County Schools and Tiftarea Academy entered essays in the contest. Adam Spurlin, a Matt Wilson 6th grader, won 3rd place in the essay contest. Congratulations, Adam!

They may not agree on whether they like to eat green eggs and ham, but students all agreed that they loved having volunteers from Target come and read Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham to them. Target volunteers helped celebrate Read Across America by reading and giving out goodies to students at Matt Wilson on Tuesday, March 2. Read Across America is a nationwide event designed to promote reading and to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
