Media Center Policies and Procedures

Circulation Policies

  1. Students are entered into the automated circulation system using the barcode on their ID card. To check out materials, students must present their ID card.
  2. Most books are checked out for two weeks and may be renewed once. These books have an overdue fine of $.10 a day.
  3. Reference books, vertical file materials, and back issues of magazines may be checked out for overnight use only. Reference books are checked out at the end of the day and should be returned the next day before first period. Overdue fines on overnight materials are $.25 a day.
  4. Students may be allowed to have up to five books at a time. However, limitations may be placed on the number of items checked out if there is a large demand on the topic covered by the books or if the student requests more than two books on the same specific subject. Accelerated Reader books and back issues of magazines are limited to two at a time; reference books, one at a time.
  5. Return all books to the book return at the circulation desk or leave them in the outside book drop after hours. If a book is overdue and you wish to pay fines, return it to a media specialist. Do not leave books to be returned on the circulation desk.
  6. All borrowers are responsible for lost and damaged materials.
  7. Overdue and fine notices are sent to students through their second block.
  8. Students may not check out materials if they have an overdue book or a fine on their record.

Students in the Media Center

  1. Students may come to the media center before and after school without a pass, but they should sign in at the circulation desk.
  2. During the school day students must have their agenda book with a media center notation when they come into the media center. Upon entering the media center, a student should sign in at the circulation desk. When the student is ready to return to class, he or she should sign out and ask a member of the media staff to initial the agenda book and give a media center departure time.
  3. Students who do not have an assigned project (a note from their teacher with project described) will be limited to 15 minutes in the media center.

Internet Guidelines

  1. All students have access to computer/internet resources unless a parent or guardian objects, in writing, to the use of these.
  2. Internet use is limited to educational purposes only.  Students are not allowed to chat, email, order, or play games on media center computers.
  3. Internet use must be under the direct supervision of or with the written permission of a classroom teacher.  Students should have a note with the research topic defined.
  4. Personal disks should be checked for viruses at the circulation desk prior to use in media center computers.  (Floppy disks may be purchased in the media center for 75 cents.)
  5. Students may have their computer privileges restricted or removed if these policies are not followed.

 AR Policies

  1. Students will take all AR tests in the media center.
  2. Students must have their ID to take an AR test.
  3. Students may only take tests on books checked out at least overnight from the TCHS media center. (See # 4.)
  4. Students may take a test on personal books or books checked out from other sources with the approval of their English teacher.  Students must come by the media center to request a permission form.  The students must have the book with them, in addition to the completed form, when they come to take the test.
  5. Testing is limited to books which students have had checked out during the current nine weeks grading period.
  6. AR testing is offered during all four blocks, during lunch, and after school.  No testing is allowed before school.
  7. AR is an independent reading program.  Students may not earn points for books studied in the classroom.
