Field Trips

4th Grade Field Trips

  • Charles Spencer Fourth Graders have two fabulous field trips during the year.  In the fall, they go to NESPAL to experience many hands on activities.  Students are able to understand and see the life of an ant.  Did you know that if you are still in an ant bed, ants will not bite you?  Picking cotton and seeing a combine up close is another of their highlights.  It is much more difficult than you think to separate the cotton from the seed.   Needless to say, NESPAL makes sure that Georgia’s state standards are met through this program.
  • Judge Mims comes to Charles Spencer to speak to the students about the law and the court system.  Then later in the year, all fourth graders are given the opportunity to participate in one of two court cases.  There are lawyers, deputies, court recorders, and even a judge.  This lucky child gets to wear the robe and bang the gavel.  Of course, the jury members have the final decision of whether a class mate will be guilty or innocent.  Parents enjoy this trip, too.  With all of the cameras rolling, it almost feels like a “real” court case.

5th Grade Field Trips

  • Georgia Agrirama. In the fall 5th grade students go back in time at the Georgia Agrirama.  The students take part in the Living History Workshop where they enjoy things such as working on the farm, running the printing press, or even working at the doctor’s office.  This field trip gives students a chance to have first-hand knowledge of how children their age lived in the 1800’s.
  • Parks at Chehaw. In the spring the 5th graders will head to the Parks at Chehaw.  Students will stroll through the park viewing both native and exotic animals in their natural habitats.  This makes for a great time to review invertebrates and vertebrates.

6th Grade Field Trips

    • 6th grade teachers, Susan Kennedy, Stephanie Bullington, and Angelia Cook, along with a wonderful group of parent volunteers, took approximately 90 sixth grade students on a science field trip to Providence Canyon, near Lumpkin, Georgia.  The students enjoyed a day long adventure actually being able to see the effects of weathering and erosion that were studied about as we hiked across the floor and rim of the canyon.  They were able to watch a movie of the history of the canyon including theories of how the canyon started and efforts made to halt the erosion of the canyon.  Because it was a Saturday trip, not all students were in attendance due to other commitments.

ILP Field Trips

  • As a culmination of a study on weather and the solar system, the fourth grade ILP class visited the weather station at WALB and the Wetherbee Planetarium in Albany, Georgia.  There they learned the importance of weather forecasting and all the intricate details involved with a telecast.

They also experienced the solar system by viewing it from space at the Planetarium.  Following this the students visited the hands-on Science Discovery Center to participate in a display on sound and magnets.  This field trip gave the students a chance to do more in-depth studies on some of their important science standards.
