Dr. Gary Hawkins, Water Management/Alternative Energy Specialist, visited Matt Wilson Elementary School on May 13 to give an informative presentation to teachers Dana Foster and Julie Gunn’s fifth grade Gifted class students. As a researcher and extension specialist in the Department of Crop and Soil Science of the University of Georgia’s Tifton Campus, Dr. Hawkins was one of several scientists asked to travel with a group of researchers and Georgia businessmen to Chennai and Tamil Nadu, India, in January of this year. MATT WILSON ELEMENTARY READERS TAKE TOP HONORS

Matt Wilson Elementary School students Mary M. (Mae Mae) Collins and Braeden Wilbanks were honored at the annual Reader of the Year ceremony at Annie Belle Clark Elementary on May 7. The Tift County Reading Association sponsors the annual ceremony to honor those students who earned the most Accelerated Reader points at their school from April 1 to March 31 each year. This year Collins received the honor for the fourth grade at Matt Wilson, and Wilbanks earned top honors for the fifth grade. Collins also was recognized as the fourth grade Reader of the Year for all of Tift County.
