Media Center
The mission of the media center is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and
information. ESM's media program supports the curriculum by providing adequate resources, personnel
and training, so that both students and teachers become independent users of information. This mission is
accomplished by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats and by providing instruction to foster knowledge and stimulate interest in reading, viewing and utilizing information and ideas.
Georgia Book Award Nominees
The Georgia Children's Book Award was established in 1968 to foster a love of reading in the children of Georgia and to introduce books of literary excellence. Books are nominated for the awards by teachers and media specialists from the state of Georgia. A final list of 20 nominees are selected.
At the beginning of this school year, ESM media specialists registered the media center as a voting site. Throughout the year, the media specialists will present the books from the list of nominees to students. And in the spring, the students will vote for their favorite. To be eligible to vote they must have read and passed the AR quiz from at least three (3) nominated titles.
The book receiving the most votes from students in grades 4-8 will be the winner.
We encourage students to share comments on the Online Book Club (ESMS reads Wiki) once they have passed their first AR quiz on one of the nominated titles.
Media Center Services for Students
- Current issues of magazines are kept on the periodical shelves in the reading area and are not circulated. Back issues are kept in a storage area and may be checked out at the end of the day for OVERNIGHT use. These should be returned before first period the next day.
- Several electronic databases are available for use in the center.
- Students with written teacher permission have access to the Internet at eighteen workstations in the center.
- Printing and photocopying is provided for students for school related material. There is a .50 per page charge for color printing.
Media Center Procedures for Students
- Most books are checked out for 10 school days. (Books may be renewed once by bringing them to the circulation desk for re-check.)
- Return all books to the book return in the media center. DO NOT LEAVE BOOKS TO BE RETURNED ON THE CIRCULATION DESK OR ON BOOK CARTS AROUND THE DESK. They could be shelved without being checked in.
- All borrowers are responsible for lost or damaged materials.
- Overdue notices will be sent to students’ language arts classes. These should be cleared promptly. Media center privileges must be withheld until these obligations are met.
- Students must have a media center pass to come to the media center at any time, including before school and after school. They may, however, stop in to return a book at any time during the day.
