Tift Schools to get new message board and scoreboard

Tift County Schools and the Touchdown Club have partnered to bring a new digital scoreboard for Brodie Field and a message board on the back of the scoreboard that will face the intersection of Eighth Street and Baldwin Drive. Numerous factors were considered before the system purchased the boards.

“It became very apparent at graduation that our current scoreboard was in much need of repair,” said Patrick Atwater, Superintendent. “It was going to be very expensive to fix, and we would still be left with an antiquated board. It has been in use for more than a decade.”

He added that several different schools in the system had also requested to have digital message boards to better communicate information to parents. Rather than purchase several smaller boards, having one larger one was more efficient.

“Communication is a crucial component of our strategic plan we created with the public’s input,” he said. “The message board is being placed in a very high-traffic area, allowing our parents and community to see more announcements, information and student activities.”

The Touchdown Club will be selling advertising on the boards, with a majority of the proceeds going directly back to the school system, benefitting all students.

“We are excited to have an opportunity to raise funds to support our football program, but are just as excited to know much of the money is going to help all of the schools,” said Spud Bowen, president of the Touchdown Club. “We’ve already had big names like McDonald’s, Zaxby’s and South Georgia Banking sign on. I feel confident we will be sending a check for nearly $100,000 to the school system before the first home football game.”

Those funds will be divided between the General Fund (which pays for salaries, supplements, supplies and other things necessary for teaching) and the Partners in Education program (funds that are given directly to principals to use as needed for everything from student rewards, field trip scholarships and specialty supplies). Businesses who are Partners will also be recognized on the message board.

“The money that is raised will more than pay for the boards,” said Atwater. “They will also pay off by allowing us to better show the community the great things that happen in our schools every day. When people drive by the message board, they will see photographs of our students being honored, teachers being innovative in the classroom and upcoming event announcements. We’ve got a lot to be proud of, and this will help us to show it off more.”

The scoreboard and message boards have the potential to bring approximately $250,000 back into the system each year through the general fund and Partners in Education.

The message board will be approximately 17’ wide by 10’ high, and will be operated daily from 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. The scoreboard side with be approximately 30’ wide by 17’ high. The purchase was approved by the Board of Education in its regular June meeting at a cost of $386,000. Installation will occur in August.
