Tift County Schools to offer breakfast and lunch at no cost to families

Tift County Schools are once again offering free breakfast and lunch to all students through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for free meal reimbursement for the upcoming school year. This program will save Tift County families more than $300,000. It also eliminates the procedure of distributing and processing reduced-cost/free meal applications.

“We are happy to support our families in Tift County by providing all students, regardless of income status, an opportunity to eat a nutritious breakfast and lunch at no cost every day,” said Vanessa Hayes, Tift County School Nutrition Program Director.

The Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 includes the implementation of CEP to insure that every student in low-income neighborhoods and/or districts can participate in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP). To qualify, a district or school must have 40 percent or more of its students eligible for free meals based on direct certification.

By participating in CEP and eliminating the need for meal applications, Tift County will also reduce administrative and printing costs. Families also benefit from the elimination of completing and submitting meal applications.
