Board to hold millage rate increase public hearings
The Tift County Board of Education has tentatively adopted a millage rate which will require an increase in property taxes by three mills, bringing the millage rate to 17.964 mills. This is a 20.06% increase. This increase is deemed necessary by the Board to meet increased demands on public education and the continued rise in costs. The proposed tax increase for a home with homestead and with a fair market value of $100,000 is approximately $114 and the proposed tax increase for non-homestead property with a fair market value of $100,000 is approximately $120.
The Board will be holding several public hearings that are open to all concerned citizens. The hearings will be held at the Board of Education office at 207 N. Ridge Ave. in Tifton. Dates and times for these hearings are July 31 at noon, July 31 at 6 p.m. and Aug. 7 at noon.
