Use of Electronic Devices

It shall be the rule of the Tift County Board of Education that possession of an electronic device by a student in school shall be permitted as specifically prescribed by this rule. Students shall not be permitted to use any personal electronic communicaation device, including cell phones, on school campus during the classroom instructional time. For the purposes of this rule, classroom instructional time begins when the first bell rings for students to report to an assigned activity and ends when school is dismissed for the day.

Students are prohibited from using any electronic devices during the operation of a school bus, including, but not limited to, cell phones, pages, audible radios, tape or compact disc players without headphones, or any other electronic device in a manner that might interfere with the school bus communications equipment or the school bus driver’s operation of the school bus. Students with a health condition, which requires the use of such a device, are exempt from this rule. A student requiring the use of such a device shall have on file in the principal’s office a statement from a licensed physician certifying that such a device is necessary for the health of the student.

The superintendent or his/her designee shall develop administrative guidelines to carry out this policy.
